Kumbhalgarh Fort
Kumbhalgarh is an ancient hill fort situated at Kumbhalgarh in Rajasthan district, at a distance of 500 m from Kumbhalgarh Bus Stop. It is Rajasthan’s second-biggest fort after Chittorgarh. Kumbhalgarh is one of Rajasthan ‘s top heritage sites, and one of the popular places to visit as part of the trip to Udaipur.
Kumbhalgarh Fort is a Mewar fortress designed by Rana Kumbha under the supervision of famous architect Mandan between 1443 AD and 1458 AD. The fort was built on the site of an older castle ascribed to Samprati, a 2nd-century BC Jaina prince. Kumbhalgarh is also the birthplace of Mewar’s great King and Warrior, Maharana Pratap. While it was built in the 15th century Kumbhalgarh was expanded during the 19th century.
Rana Kumbha built the Fort keeping in mind the defensive function of the fort. Encircled by 13 elevated mountain tops, the fort is constructed about 3, 500 feet above the top of most ridges.
Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary
Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary is situated at a distance of 3 km from Kumbhalgarh Fort, 48 km from Rajsamand, 51 km from Nathdwara and 98 km from Udaipur, in the lush green surroundings of Aravalli ranges in Kelwara tehsil Rajsamand district, Rajasthan. It is a big draw for visitors coming to Udaipur, and also one of Kumbhalgarh’s top places to visit.
Dispersed over an area of 578 sq. Km, the Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary surrounds the Kumbhalgarh Fort and is named after the park ‘s impressive historic fort. Previously the royal hunting grounds, this area was designated a sanctuary for wildlife in 1971. The sanctuary is located at an altitude of 500 to 1,300 meters, covering portions of the districts of Rajsamand, Udaipur, and Pali. The majestic historic temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is regarded as the bulk of the body of the fort. The temple is also called Kumbhalgarh chieftainship. It is believed that Lord Shiva ‘s enormous devotee was the former King of Kumbhalgarh and therefore he built many temples and spiritual places inside the fort. This temple is one of the famous temples of Shiva which is situated near the fort. Kumbhalgarh Fort often appears whitish when viewed during the dark time from some angles. The changing temple colors provide photographers with a great photographic view. The temple’s sanctum sanctorum is compact with 6 feet of Shiv Lingam in it and is worshiped by local priest daily.
