Ranthambore National Park, Sawai Madhopur

The Ranthambore National Park is one of the country’s largest and most important national parks. It’s one of Rajasthan’s most popular wildlife sanctuaries. It is located in the district of Sawai Madhopur, in Rajasthan.

Originally established by the Indian Government as the Sawai Madhopur Game Sanctuary in 1955, the Ranthambore National Park was brought under the Project Tiger Scheme in 1973. In 1980 it was declared a National Park.

The sanctuary ‘s neighboring forests were known as Sawai Man Singh Shrine and Keladevi Shrine. By merging the nearby sanctuaries, the Tiger Reserve was expanded in 1991, and thus the Ranthambore National Park was formed.

National park Ranthambore is best known for its population of tigers. The tigers inside the park can be easily seen. The best time to visit the park is in the months of November and May, as foliage gives way to good viewing opportunities in their natural environment for these magnificent animals.

The park is on a plateau and is bordered on either side by the Chambal and Banas rivers. Also within the boundaries of Ranthambore National Park is the magnificent Ranthambore Fort. The national park abounds in wildlife and is home to many species including chitals, sloth bears, hyenas, sambars, wild boars, nilgai, leopards, and tigers.

The national park is also known for the authorities’ ongoing efforts to revive the park’s tiger population. In 2005, the sanctuary had as many as 26 tigers.

In 2008 the number rose to 34. To secure the region, the villagers are being given incentives by the authorities to keep off limits. In addition, security cameras were mounted in the park to track the animals.

Sariska National Park, Alwar

The Sariska Tiger Reserve is located in Rajasthan state’s Alwar district, and is one of Rajasthan ‘s major national parks. It was Alwar state hunting grounds. In 1955 the sanctuary was proclaimed a Wildlife Reserve and in 1978 it was put under the Tiger Project scheme.

The Sariska Tiger Reserve vegetation consists of dry deciduous forests, scrub thorns, and grasses. The park covers an area of 866 square kilometers and is located 107 km from Jaipur and 200 km from Delhi. A part of the Aravalli Range, the Sariska Tiger Reserve is rich in minerals such as copper.

The most appealing feature of the Sariska Tiger Reserve is its Royal Bengal Tigers population. It is home to a large number of wild animals including Rhesus monkeys, Hanuman langurs, hares, wild boars, chousingha or the four horned antelopes, chinkara, nilgai, sambhar, golden jackals, striped hyenas, caracals, jungle cats, and leopards.

This also includes a large number of bird species, including the Great Indian Horned Owl, crested serpent eagle, golden backed woodpecker, tree pie, sand grouse, bush quail, grey partridge, peafowl, and more. The reserve also boasts some great historic sites including the Kankanwadi Fort, the Pandupol Hills, the Hanuman Temple on the Pandupol Hill.

The Sariska Tiger Sanctuary is also the first ever Tiger Reserve in the world where successful relocation and rehabilitation of tigers was carried out. In 2005 a leading journalist confirmed the decreasing number of tigers in the Sariska Tiger Reserve.

For his story the reporter reported that no tigers were left in the reserve. This led to a series of investigations by the authorities, and efforts were made to relocate tigers upon learning that the report was indeed true. Three tigers have been reinserted into the Sariska Tiger Reserve. With five adults the number has now risen to a total of seven.

Keoladeo Ghana Bird Sanctuary , Bharatpur

National Park Keoladeo Ghana was previously known as Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary. During the hibernal season, the sanctuary houses a large number of migratory birds, and is a very popular tourist spot in Rajasthan. The bird sanctuary, which attracts as many as 230 species of avian species from all over the country and the world during the migratory season

The park was declared a protected area in 1971, and was later added to the list of World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. The bird sanctuary is a man-made wetland, and a significant Rajasthan national park. Geographically, the national park is of great importance, as it protects the town of Bharatpur from flooding during flash flooding and also provides the village cattle with pastureland. The spot had acted as waterfowl hunting grounds in the earlier days.

The bird sanctuary is home to 379 species of flowering plants, 366 species of birds and other animals. The sanctuary is one of the world’s richest avian habitation areas. The sanctuary was established about 250 years ago and is named after the Temple of Keoladeo located within its premises. The Keoladeo Ghana National Park is one of the world’s best birding areas and annually receives as many as 1,00,000 visitors. Of these approximately 45,000 are foreigners. It is a very popular tourist destination in Rajasthan and for this reason accommodation facilities in and around the sanctuary have also been arranged.

The park is open every day from sunrise to sunset, and is easily accessible by road. Tourists can search the Forest Lodge for accommodation within the park and a government-run guest house named Shanti Kutir.

Desert National Sanctuary, Jaisalmer

The National Park of the Desert is one of Rajasthan ‘s main national parks, and is located near Jaisalmer city. The national park, extending over an area of 3162 square kilometres, is one of the country’s largest national parks.

The national park’s spectacular scenery is one of the main tourist destinations from around the world. About 20 per cent of the park consists of sand dunes. The rest of the landmark consists of fixed dunes, intermediate zones, bottoms of salt lakes and craggy rocks. It is an excellent example of an ecosystem in the desert.

Despite the landscape, birdlife abounds in the national park. In the National Park, the most commonly sighted birds include the endangered Great Indian Bustard, sand grouse, kestrels, laggar falcons, spotted eagles, tawny eagles, short toed eagles, vultures, buzzards, falcons, harriers and eagles.

The Desert National Park also holds an incredible collection of 180 million years old plant and animal fossils. Around November and January, the most convenient time to visit Desert National Park is. Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary, Kumbhalgarh

The Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Rajasthan, Rajsamand district. The sanctuary is one of Rajasthan’s most celebrated wildlife sanctuaries.

The sanctuary stretches over an area of 578 sq km and surrounds the Kumbhalgarh Fort. Located at an elevation of between 500 and 1300 metres, the sanctuary is home to a wide variety of wildlife, some of which are highly endangered. Some of the animals inhabiting the sanctuary include hares, chinkaras, four horned antelopes, nilgai, sambhar, jungle cats, hienas, sloth bears, leopards and wolves.

The sanctuary also abounds in birdlife and some of the birds that can easily be spotted here include grey jungle fowl, peacocks, doves, white breasted kingfisher, bulbules, pigeons, golden oriole, and parakeets.

The most appealing thing about the sanctuary is the natural grandeur of Kumbhalgarh. The scenic beauty attracts visitors and travelers from all over the country and from all over the world. It is located about 100 kilometers from Udaipur, making the sanctuary an extremely popular tourist destination.

In the sanctuary, the visitors can enjoy foot tracking and horse safaris arranged by local tour operators. The safaris route starts from the fort of Kumbhalgarh and continues until Ghanerao. Visitors can spot several species of birds, four corned antelopes, chinkaras and neelgais on an abandoned road near Ghanerao.

Darrah Sanctuary, Kota

Darrah National Park is one of Rajasthan’s most visited national parks. It was established in 2004 and includes the Darrah Wildlife Sanctuary, the Chambal Wildlife Sanctuary, and the Jaswant Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary, three wildlife sanctuaries.

The national park has large stretches of woods that were historically part of Kota’s hunting grounds for the Maharaja. The wildlife sanctuary, spread over an area of 250 sq km, is situated at a distance of 50 km from Kota town. In 1955 the sanctuary was declared officially a protected zone. A number of species, including wild boar, deer, nilgai, cheetah and wolves, are home to it.

A visit to the Darrah shrine is a very gratifying experience. The region’s natural beauties are beyond description. In addition it has a very rich cultural past as well. Jhalwar, another popular destination for tourists is very close to Darrah National Park.

There is also a very lovely fort inside the sanctuary premises. Due to its architectural beauty, the fort’s Jenana Khana is worth visiting. Another destination worth visiting during a trip to the Darrah National Park is the Sun Temple in Jharipatan.

The Chandrabhaga River flows very close to the National Park and there are a number of ancient temples, dating back to the 7th and 8th centuries, which are situated along the river banks. Every year, the national park is closed to visitors from July through September.

Mount Abu Sanctuary, Mount Abu

Located in the country’s oldest mountain ranges-the Aravalli Mountains, Mount Abu Wildlife Sanctuary is one of Rajasthan’s most visited wildlife sanctuaries. It was designated a sanctuary for wildlife in 1980 and is home to many wild animals , birds, plants , and trees.

Measuring 19 km in length and 6 km in width, at the Guru Shikhar hill, the highest elevation in Rajasthan, the altitude ranges from 300 meters to 1722 metres. The most fascinating thing about the region’s rocks is that they are igneous rocks, and larger cavities have built on most of them because of the impact of wind and rain.

A large number of plants and trees inhabit the wildlife sanctuary. The sanctuary comprises as many as 112 plant families from 449 genera and 820 species. The sanctuary includes as many as 81 species of trees, as 89 species of shrubs, 28 species of climbers and 17 species of tuberous plants.

The sanctuary also contains a number of orchid plants. There are also bamboo forests in part of the sanctuary. The wildlife sanctuary is home to a wide range of animal species including lions , tigers, leopards, hedgehogs, porcupines, Indian hares, mongoose, pangolin, bears, wild boars, langurs, foxes, hyenas, jackals, small Indian civets, jungle cats, sambhars and many more. There are as many as 250 bird species present here. The speciality of the Mount Abu Wildlife Sanctuary is the black forest fowl.

Sita Mata Sanctuary, Pratapgarh

The Sita Mata Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Rajasthan’s Pratapgarh district, and is one of Rajasthan ‘s key wildlife sanctuaries. In 1979 it was declared a protected area and sprawls over an area of 423 sq km. Decked in dense forests, the sanctuary is Pratapgarh’s main attraction.

The wildlife sanctuary ‘s landscape is ondulating as three separate topographically distinct ecosystems-the Aravalli Mountains, the Vindhyachal Hills, and the Malwa Plateau are joining. The Region’s average elevation ranges from 280 to 600 metres.

The region’s summer temperature hovers between 32 degrees and 45 degrees, while winter temperatures range from 6 degrees to 14 degrees.

The Tankiya, Budho, Sita Mata, Karmoi and Jakham rivers pass through the heavily wooded sanctuary for wildlife. The sanctuary is located 45 km from Pratapgarh, and 108 km from Udaipur city. The sanctuary is the only one in the country where teak of such abundance is found to be of high value.

This is home to a vast variety of plants, trees, and wildlife. Because of the immense abundance of avian species found here, the Sita Mata wildlife sanctuary is often called a Bird Paradise. The most frequently found birds in this region include cattle egret, small egret, tawny eagle, Indian darter, grey heron, small grebe, small cormorant, white-eyed buzzard, black winged stilt and several others.

Two new species of birds were discovered at the Sita Mata Wildlife Sanctuary, namely the white thrown earth thrush and the black necked monarch.

The frequently seen species among wild animals include the neelgai, wild bear, seen deer, porcupine, jungle cat, fox, jackal, hyena, leopard, pangoline, wild boar, caracal and four horned antelope. The Sita Mata Wildlife Sanctuary’s most compelling attraction is the vegetarian mammal flying squirrel. The best time to visit the shrine is October to February.

Keladevi Wildlife Sanctuary, Karauli

The Keladevi Wildlife Sanctuary is part of national park Ranthambore. The development of the Ranthambore National Park included nearby wildlife sanctuaries, one of which was the Keladevi Wildlife Sanctuary. The Keladevi Wildlife Sanctuary, spread over an area of 676 square kilometres, is one of Rajasthan’s most important wildlife sanctuaries.

National Park Ranthambore is flanked on the North and South respectively by the Banas and Chambal Rivers. Visitors from the sanctuary can get a splendid view of the rivers. The sanctuary boasts tremendous natural beauty and is home to a large variety of animal and bird life. It is named after the Temple of Keladevi located within the sanctuary premises.

The sanctuary ‘s commonly seen animals include sambhar, wolves, hyenas, sloth bears, leopards, tigers, jackals, wild boars, chinkara, and others. National Chambal Wildlife Sanctuary, Kota

The National Chambal Sanctuary is located on the Chambal River, at the point where Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh cross the boundaries of the three states. In 1978, the sanctuary was first declared as being in Madhya Pradesh.

Now, there’s a narrow stretch of eco-reserve where the three states maintain and administer. Also called the National Chambal Gharial Wildlife Sanctuary, the sanctuary is dedicated to the preservation of critically endangered gharials, the red crowned roof tortoise and the threatened Ganges river dolphin. The sanctuary is protected by the 1972 Wildlife Protection Act of the country.

Several species such as the Indian Wolf, striped hyena, smooth coated otter, mugger crocodiles and others can be found at the sanctuary. Eight of the 26 rare turtle species, including the crowned river turtle, three striped roof tortoises, and Indian narrow-headed softshell tortoises are also home.

Species of mammals include hedgehog, flying fox, hares, porcupines, Northern Palm Squirrels, Indian Gazelle, Blackbucks, nilgai, sambar, wild boar, jungle cats, Indian gray mongoose, Indian small mongoose, and common palm civet.

Gharials, crocodiles, fresh water dolphins and rare turtles are the main attractions of the sanctuary, rendering the National Chambal Sanctuary one of Rajasthan’s most endangered wildlife sanctuaries.

There are several activities at the National Chambal Sanctuary which are offered to visitors. Visitors can rent boats at the sanctuary with guides, and enjoy photographing muggers, gharials and crocodiles. Machiya Safari Park, Jodhpur

Mukundara Tiger Reserve, Kota

Jaisamand Sanctuary, Udaipur

Jaisamand Sanctuary is another tiger reserve in Rajasthan that is highly common among the general population. Jaisamand Sanctuary is arranged at a distance of 51 km south-east of Udaipur, covering an area of 160 km2. Presented in the year 1957, this Sanctuary is honored with varied vegetation of various species.

The species includes sloth bear, panther, chital, chinkara, wild hog and a large range of winged creatures, such as darter open bill stork, lake heron, tiny cormorant and Indian shag. When you are flying then Maharana Pratap Airport, Udaipur, will be the nearest aircraft terminal. Udaipur joins Delhi, via Jaipur and Ahmadabad, to Mumbai. It’ll be a 9-hour drive by street from Jaipur.

For the wildlife, lovers certainly this is the place for your next visit. Tal Chhapar Shekhawati Shrine, Rajasthan is one of Rajasthan’s most gone haven stand-outs. Arranged in the north-west piece of Rajasthan’s Chiru area. Arranged on the edges of the Thar Desert, Tal Chappar haven is known as home to some 2,000 dark bucks. The nearest railway station is Chappar, which is located on North Western Railways’ Degana – Churu – Rewari meter gage line. Sanganer (Jaipur) is the nearest airport, at a distance of 215 km from Chappar.

Bassi Wildlife Sanctuary

About five kilometers from Bassi Fort Palace, in Rajasthan’s Chittorgarh district. Sprawls over an area of 50 sq km on the western border of Vindhya ranges, and is habitat for many animals such as wild boar, mongoose, hyena, jackal, four horned antelope and panther etc. This is also home to many migratory birds such as pelicans and cranes that you see in the winter season.

Trees such as Dhok, Churel, Salar, Butea etc are found in the sanctuary and it focuses mainly on preserving animals such as Panther, Hyaena, Jackal. Chital: Chital. The viewpoint at Sarna Height and River are two main viewpoints that are being developed as part of its development project.

Gajner Wildlife Sanctuary

It is located nearly 32 km from Bikaner city and one of the destinations that has been gaining widespread attention since the last few years. Fauna including wild fowls, nilgais, goats, antelopes, black bucks, desert foxes, chinkaras and wild boars are housed in this protected area.

Gajner Wildlife Sanctuary It is hard to believe that such a protected area can be home to the epicenter of heritage and culture which we lovingly know as Bikaner. At the center of the forest is a natural lake that serves the dwellers of the forest as a heavenly residence. It is essentially a forest in the desert.

Best Time to Visit : Winter season is the best time to visit any sanctuary of wildlife as the animals most often come out of their shell due to the environment. Travel from November and April.

Sajjangarh Wildlife Sanctuary

The Sajjangarh Wildlife Sanctuary is located 5 km away from the Sajjangarh Palace and surrounds the Udaipur Palace. Bansdara Hill’s backdrop enchants us with spectacular sunset and sunrise views. The shrine houses sambars, chitals, wild boars, hyenas, blue bulls, panthers, hares, jackals etc. Beyond that, you will also see a number of snakes, such as crocodiles, alligators and birds.

The Sanctuary’s biodiversity is protected by the Tiger Lake which is also known as Lake Bari or Lake Jiyan. It is an artificial lake that was founded in 1664 by former Mewar ruler Maharana Raj Singh. Gorilla viewpoint allows for a view of a number of bird and animal species, and a small fish-shaped hill called Machla Magra.

Todgarh Raoli Wildlife Sanctuary It is one of Rajasthan’s well-kept secrets, very untouristic and unexploited. One of Rajasthan ‘s pristine wildlife sanctuaries, Todgarh Raoli Wildlife Sanctuary, is spread over Rajasthan ‘s districts of Pali, Ajmer and Rajsamand. It is located 105 km from Ajmer, and Ajmer Junction Railway Station and Beawar Railway Station are the nearest rail connections.

This dense tropical deciduous forest and grassland ‘s main wildlife includes leopard, sloth bears, wild boars, common langur, Indian wolf chinkara etc. This sanctuary for wildlife is located in Todgarh village and has an impeccable resistance to ecotourism.
